♥ Handmade Christmas Gifts

As well as the Hello Kitty set & bear that I made for my cousins, I also made the majority of everyone else's. I didn't make anything for my sister, because she had declared earlier in the year that she hates (my) handmade stuff. I don't know, her loss I guess! I ended up buying her lots of cheap trinkets instead, but moving on... I made this lap quilt for my Mum with scraps of fabric I had.
My first proper quilt, & it's definitely not perfect, but she loved it! I don't have a quilting foot on my machine, so this took forever, haha, & instead of making life easier for myself & quilting from one end to the other in straight lines I decided to quilt each patch with a square. Not fun! I ended up finishing this the day before Christmas Eve. As you can see Button wanted to help me out with pics, but he's cute so I hope you don't mind :P

I made these matching initial cushions for my Granny & Grandad. They were another long project, popcorn stitch is another thing I'm sick of now, haha! You can't see, but they are red & white gingham on the back & have feather pillow inserts.
This was another gift for my Mum, I painted 3 illustrations of our little doggies, & then spent hours searching for & then eventually buying a frame that would fit all 3 of them. It's now hanging in the hallway, & Mum declared it her "favourite gift". Yay!

For every other adult couple in the family I made them 2 jars of jam & packaged them nicely. My jam was also the main present last year, & everyone seemed to like it, so I made 2 pots this year, strawberry again, & "jumbleberry", which was a blackberry, raspberry, blackcurrant & redcurrant mix. I also painted the design for the labels, (this isn't the best pic), of a badger holding a basket of fruit.

Photobucket Photobucket
Hey everyone! Hope you've all been well & enjoyed the holidays. It's been a pretty tiring few days, for me at least, but I wanted to show you pics of my christmas day outfit. We went over to Charlotte's flat & had dinner there, which was lovely & then on to my Aunt's house for more present swapping! I've got quite of lot of posts lined up for the next week, want to show you all the gifts I ended up making for people, which they seemed to like, so yay!

I'm off to go & relax some more now, haha, I'm not really one for sales shopping, even with all the good deals on women's clothing, plus I'm still on no buy December! And I'm doing a 5 item only January, eek! I really do need to curb my spending habits, but it's so hard :P

♥ White Winter Lolita

Hey again everyone! Sorry for neglecting the blog for a while, I've been super tired/not felt like blogging recently. I went round to my sister's today, & made a vow to take pics of my outfit, despite the rain (hence the drowned rat look, haha).
I've also been super neglectful of my emails, I promise I will try and reply soon, probably after Christmas at this rate though! Speaking of which, I still have one more present to make, eek! & only 2 days left. Can't believe how fast the years go by as I get older, it's really rather ridculous haha!

Anyway, back to the pictures. I had to include Charlotte's little doggy, Lady Harriet, isn't she adorable? Not quite as adorable as my owns dogs :P, but cute nevertheless! We put her in an adorable cape (I want one!) so she would stay warm & dry despite the weather.

Hope you're all doing well & enjoying the holidays! Have a Merry Christmas from me, & here's to more regular programming from here on in!

♥ Glittery Nails

Recently I was lucky enough to come second in the ASOS FashionFinder Nail Art Competition with my cupcake nails. I won 16 Barry M nail polishes, which were the entire Gelly Nail Paint collection & the entire range of Jewel Nail Glitters. Yay thank you ASOS & Barry M! I haven't tried out the Gelly ones yet, but from what I've seen/read, they are supposed to be similar to Shellac & super shiny.

I have tried out 5 of the glitters though, which I am currently wearing! Aren't they pretty? I especially like Rose Quartz (ring finger) & Pink Sapphire (middle finger). A lot of the glitters are holographic, which I like better than normal ones. I haven't got a lot of glitters in my nail polish collection & only one Barry M polish at all, so I was was super pleased to come second, even though you know I really don't need any more nail polish, if you've seen my nail polish racks haha!

Anyway. I'm currently on a no buy December, except for neccessities, with my Mum. We've agreed to pay the other £2 if we buy anything this month. I may have already had one slip up, but I really couldn't pass up this £10 velvet skirt by New Look. Still waiting for it to arrive though, hope it fits. I am a bit of a shopping addict, so even just the one order is pretty good for me, & hopefully will be able to keep up with it. Resisting ASOS codes has been difficult, haha!

♥ Malm Makeover

Before I redid my room, the furniture was mainly from Ikea, & pretty basic/not very pretty. I had the Malm chest of drawers in the birch veneer & it really didn't go with my new theme. So I decided to give it a makeover, what do you think? Sorry these aren't the greatest pics, but I forgot to take any before I put the chest back in place, but you can get the idea.

For those interested, this is what I did/what I used:

  • Malm Chest
  • Decorative moulding x 4 strips from B&Q (I think it was this one)
  • 8 handles (I bought these)
  • 4 furniture appliques (this one)
  • Old pale pink wall paint & some red acrylic to deepen the colour
  • Satin varnish
  • Sandpaper
I'm not sure if this would work on any of the plastic laminate ones, but since my chest was wood veneer I simply lightly sanded it to give the paint something to stick to.

Then I cut all the moulding strips to size (a small saw would be ideal, I had to use a sharp serrated knife & sandpaper to cut & do the corners, since I discovered our saw needed a new blade & we had none on the day I wanted to start & I am impatient haha!), so that they bordered the drawer fronts. I also cut one for the top overhang. I then glued them in place, along with the furniture appliques.
I only bought one furniture applique, since they are pretty pricey & I didn't want to spend £20 on them alone. I had some silicone & catalyst, & made a mould from the one I did buy, then moulded the rest from polymer clay. Of course if you don't already have those things lying around like I do, then it's cheaper just to buy as many as you need, unless you are going to use a lot of them!
The next step was to give it 2 coats of the paint I had mixed up. I mixed about 1.5 litres, but ended up only using about a quarter of it.
Then varnish, I did 2 coats. I bought a 750ml can, but only used a tiny amount in the end, so I could have saved money by buying the smallest pot they had, oops!
Finally, attach your handles. Mine are non functioning, since the drawers already slide out easily by pulling the top, but I liked the look of them, so I only glued them on. The tiny screws were too hard for me to handle, haha, & I didn't want to mess up my work by gouging a hole in the chipboard. Obviously you'll need to screw them in if you are planning to use them!
And done! This took about 3 days, with letting the paint & varnish dry in between. It's not perfect, but I think it's much better than before! It ended up costing me about £50, excluding the chest & materials I already had. Still much better than buying a whole new chest, which for the style I wanted, would have been at least £200! I have lots of varnish, 4 handles & a mould to make more appliques left over though, along with the paint, which can be used for other projects too.
